Mount Kilimanjaro Climbing Over View

Mount Kilimanjaro is a huge attraction in Africa, its highest peak stands at 5895 meters above sea level. This is the highest point in Africa "Roof of Africa". Mount Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain in Africa as well as the highest free standing mountain in the world. The mountain has three outstanding peaks namely mawenzi, kibo and uhuru. The latter is the highest. There are five routes to climb mount Kilimanjaro; name machame route, marangu route, shira route, umbwe route and lemosho route.

Machame Route "Whiskey Route"

Machame route is the most scenic route on mount kilianjaro. The trail begins through the rainforest, shira plateau and baranco wall. This route circumvents the mountain giving the climber views from different angles and the hiker is able to take amazing photos. The route has minimal traffic and it's more demanding in terms of fitness. The trail is much steeper and gradually inclines.

Marangu Route "Coca-Cola route"

Marangu route is the most Shortest and easiest route while climbing Mount Kilimanjaro to the summit. It is used by 90% of climbers. This route is very scenic and has a well-defined path. Accommodation on this route is mountain huts. This is the only route, which provides comfortable sleeping huts, equipped with beds and mattresses at every campsite. All the camps on this route have radio contact with the Park Headquarters.

Shira Route

Shira route is a difficult route. The first potion of the route is not hike but climbers are driven past the rain forest upto the shira plateau. The route has low traffic until it briefly combines with machame route and the traffic increases. Shira route is ideal for climbers who are confident in their ability to acclimatize to altitude, and to walk over steeper paths for extended periods.

Umbwe Route

Umbwe route is one of the shortest routes to the Southern Glaciers and the Western Breach. It is probably the most scenic, non-technical route on Kilimanjaro. It is quite tasking, primarily due to the relatively fast ascent to higher altitude, but the rewards are plentiful.

The traffic on this route is minimal but it is a good option for fit climbers because its steep but the distance covered is short. You also get to spend a night in the Kilimanjaro crater; the largest volcano in Africa.

Lemosho Route

Lemosho route is a new route to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. The route has minimal traffic, beautiful scenery and a high summit success compared to others. The lemosho route crosses the entire plain from east to west in a relatively smooth hike and then connects with the machame route where traffic increases. The route flows through lava tower, barranco wall and barafu also known as the southern circuit.
